1979 El Camino SS, 8,767 original miles with a Stock 350 - Manifolds, Shorty Headers or Long Tubes?

Hey guys, we’re about to get started on our 1979 El Camino SS to get it back on the road for the first time in 15 years. Already rebuilt the carb, rebuilt the front end suspension, and added a new fuel tank and fuel lines, plus 2 inch drop spindles on the front. Was curious about what to do regarding manifolds or headers before doing the exhaust. I’m not worried about more power but more so about better sound. Would short headers or long tubes be worth it on a stock engine, or should I just buy replacement manifolds? Also, if I did long tubes, would I have to worry about them dragging with the drop spindles? Thank you in advance

Headers sound cool, no doubt. However, long tubes will drag. I had them on an 80 Cutlass that was dropped 2 inches, and they caught on everything. With shorties, you get the header sound, but you also deal with the hassle that comes with headers. The cheaper ones with thin flanges eat through gaskets, and the expensive ones are, well, expensive. You won’t see a big gain in HP with a low compression smog motor either.

Fuk bud, come check out my El Camino.

If you’re looking for sound, shorties are probably the way to go. Long tubes can be more trouble than they’re worth, especially with a dropped suspension.

That makes sense. I just want to make sure I’m not dragging anything on the road.

I agree with the shorties. They give a nice sound without the hassle of long tubes. Plus, easier installation and less chance of clearance issues.

Definitely consider how the car will be used. If it’s more for cruising, shorties will give you that nice sound and maintain the ride height. Long tubes might be better for performance but come with more complications.

Keep in mind that if you go with long tubes, you might need to modify the exhaust system to avoid dragging. It’s a good idea to get a professional opinion on clearance.

I appreciate that. I want to keep it as clean as possible without any issues.
