1999 Silverado: Advice Needed

How much would it cost to completely rebuild an engine? Nothing to do with performance. I just want it to be trustworthy. Also, the dash read 222k.

Rebuilding a properly functioning stock engine won’t always extend its lifespan. There are a few things you can do to address minor issues.

This process only takes about 5 minutes: Image Link.

Print this as well: Image Link.

Use a test light on the steering column connector behind the brake pedal. This should only take a few minutes; there are just 4 wires you need to test. If you notice any intermittent issues, check the two thick red wires in all key positions.

Why might the two red wires be problematic?

The connector is the same type as the one at the bottom of your '99 fuse block: Burned Terminals.

It’s possible that one of the red wires is losing power. This is a known issue in models from '99 onward.

Nowadays, most shops replace engines rather than refurbish them. Nowadays, I believe a new long block from GM costs around $4,000.

With today’s labor rates, especially with a small block Chevy, after the engine is out of the truck, it’s cheaper to buy a new (to you) engine and install it than to pay labor to fix whatever was wrong with the old engine.

A manufacturing business can produce remanufactured engines much faster and cheaper than a mechanic in a shop setup.
