2018 Equinox Fuel Tank

A few months after I purchased a 2018 Equinox, I noticed something odd. After purchasing it, I have not even filled the tank to 12 gallons, even though every site I visit indicates the FWD LT 1.5 liter trim should have a 14.9-gallon tank.

Does anyone have any information regarding this?

The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox diesel offers a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine with 137 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. It features a 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The fuel tank capacity is 15.6 gallons, offering a combined 32 MPG. Cargo space ranges from 29.9 to 63.5 cubic feet.

It’s unusual that your 2018 Equinox isn’t filling to its full 14.9-gallon capacity.

Here are some possible reasons:

  • Fuel Tank Sender Issue: A faulty sender unit might provide inaccurate readings, making it seem like the tank is full when it’s not.
  • Vapor Recovery System: A malfunctioning evaporative emissions (EVAP) system could be interfering with the filling process.
  • Fuel Quality: Low-quality fuel or certain additives might be affecting your tank’s capacity.

To troubleshoot:

  • Check the Fuel Cap: Ensure it’s securely tightened, as a loose or damaged cap can impact filling.
  • Monitor Fuel Consumption: Track your fuel usage to see if it matches the expected range for a 14.9-gallon tank.
  • Consult a Mechanic: If the problem continues, have a mechanic inspect the fuel system for any issues.
