Hey everyone… I picked up a used 2020 Astra K about six months ago, and it’s been a smooth ride so far. It’s got the GM VT40/CVT250 CVT transmission and the F14SHT (L3T) 1.3/1.4L engine with 145 HP. When I got it, it had 94,000 miles, and it was well maintained by the previous owner. I’m really enjoying it, but I can’t shake this worry about long-term transmission reliability. I mean, I’ve heard about this setup being used in models like the Buick Encore GX and Chevrolet Trailblazer, but here in Germany, I find not much info on it. The transmission fluid hasn’t been changed yet, and I’m torn between getting that done now or selling the car for an older model that’s more reliable. If this transmission goes, I know it’ll be a big expense. Does anyone have opinions or experiences with the VT40/CVT250? Should I keep it or keep looking?
I had a similar setup in my old Chevy… honestly, I think keeping it with proper maintenance is the way to go.

What do you mean by proper maintenance? Like just the fluid change?
@Teo
Yeah, fluid changes and keeping an eye on any leaks. Regular servicing helps a lot.
Dude, I totally get the concern about the transmission. It’s a big decision. But I think if you’ve taken care of it so far, it might be worth holding on to.

Thanks for that! I’m just worried about the costs if something goes wrong.
@Omar
For sure, big repairs can be a killer. Just weigh the costs of maintenance vs. maintenance on an older car.
If it were me, I’d change the fluid sooner rather than later. Might save you a headache.

What’s the cost of changing the fluid usually? I’m curious.

I’d guess around $100 to $200 depending on where you go. Totally worth it for peace of mind.
Yeah, I think changing the fluid is a smart move if you want to keep the car. I’ve heard good things about these transmissions when maintained well.
@Kellan
Pretty much! Just don’t ignore it, and you should be fine.
I think an older model might give you fewer worries, but then again, you might sacrifice features. It’s a tough call depending on your priorities.

Totally agree. Maybe weigh the features you love in your Astra against potential problems? Just a thought.
@True
Exactly! It really depends on how much you love the car and if you’re okay with some potential risks.
