Considering a 1st Gen Silverado – Transmission Concerns

Hey folks…

I’m thinking about getting a 1st gen Silverado, but I keep seeing online that the transmission is likely to fail and need a rebuild eventually. I don’t tow much, just occasional trips to the lumber yard.

I used to own a 2001 Chevy with that transmission but didn’t keep it long—it had under 75k miles when I traded it. I’m curious, is the 4L60E transmission better or worse than the Dodge 65RFE? Any insights or experiences would be appreciated…Thanks :blush:

I had a 1st gen Silverado, and yeah, the 4L60E can be a bit tricky. Mine held up okay, but I’ve heard stories. If you’re not towing heavy, it might be fine for you. Dodge 65RFE? A bit more solid, but not bulletproof either. If you’re gentle, the Chevy might just surprise you.
