Hello folks, about 4 weeks ago my dad bought a preowned 2022 Chevy Express 2500 and it recently broke down. We took it to a Chevy dealership about 15 minutes from our house since the place we got it from is about an hour away. The service guys said it looked like the catalytic converter was stolen and that the previous owner replaced it with aftermarket parts. They mentioned that the repair wouldn’t be covered under warranty and quoted us $6500. We’re planning to take the van back to the original place we got it at later this week. My question is will the dealership fix it since they sold us the van with bad parts? Has anybody had to deal with this? Thanks in advance for any answers or advice.
IANAL but I’m pretty sure you’re hosed unless they offered a warranty on the vehicle when you purchased it. Seeing as it’s used, it could likely be as-is. A bad cat isn’t going to cause your van to completely break down unless it’s clogged. I’ve driven cars with bad cats for ages and it just caused the engine light to turn on. I had to put an aftermarket cat on my old Malibu because someone stole the OE one. I paid $450 for it and the car ran fine for years after that.
@Elliot
So you’re saying aftermarket cats can be okay? That’s good to know. I feel like the dealership is trying to pull a fast one with that $6500 quote.

Yeah, the factory cat for a 2022 Chevy Express 2500 is about $2000. So if they’re quoting you $6500, they’re definitely trying to take advantage. You might want to shop around.
Did the dealership mention if it was sold as-is? That could make a difference legally.
