Every video and post I’ve seen about filling and checking VT40 transmission fluid is misleading.
Here’s the correct method:
- Pull the drain plug and catch all the old fluid in a drain pan.
- Measure the old fluid.
- Add the same amount of new fluid as the old fluid that was removed.
To check the transmission fluid level, follow these steps (the engine must be running):
- Start in P gear and let the engine idle.
- Use diagnostic equipment (or an infrared thermometer on the fluid pan) to confirm the transmission oil temperature is 60-80°C.
- Depress the brake pedal, shift to R gear, and hold for 10 seconds, then drive in R gear for 10 seconds before returning to P gear.
- Let the engine idle for at least 3 minutes to remove oil foam.
- Lift the vehicle, remove the transmission oil inspection plug (11mm plug), and check for a small amount of oil dripping. If no oil drips, reinstall the plug, add about 1L of fresh oil, and repeat until oil drips.
I’ll release a YouTube video showing this process soon.
