I went to use Apple CarPlay in my car, which I’ve had for two years without paying for OnStar, and it worked before. But when I came back out, the wireless CarPlay was suddenly disabled.
I recommend looking for another one.
I think it’s referring to the Wi-Fi settings on your phone, not the vehicle. That’s been my experience with other brands, at least.
I’m not sure about built-in wireless features, but I’ve used some aftermarket dongles for my cars, and they all work over Wi-Fi for both Android and Apple. This might be due to the large amount of data being transferred.
I connect to the dongle via Bluetooth, and it automatically sets up a Wi-Fi connection between the dongle and my phone for Android Auto features.
To use wireless CarPlay, you need to enable the in-car Wi-Fi hotspot. This allows your phone to stream to the car. Go to the OnStar settings in the head unit and turn the car’s Wi-Fi back on.
You don’t need an active OnStar subscription for this. Your phone will use the Wi-Fi to connect to the car and its cellular data to access the internet.
However, if you do have an active data plan for the car through OnStar or AT&T, your phone can also use the car’s Wi-Fi and data plan for internet access.
I assume you have a Wi-Fi hotspot for your car because you can’t use wireless CarPlay without it. Just simply turn on your cars Wi-Fi back on and everything will get back to normal.
