On my 2021 Chevy Trax, if you turn it completely off but leave the key in the ignition as shown, it will not lock. I always leave it in there, especially while I’m at home. I did similar the other day and was locked out. My partner had an extra key fob, and the buttons didn’t work. We had to physically unlock it before the fobs began working again. Does anyone know why or how? I have already had the battery replaced once.
First, that is not a particularly good plan. As you noticed, it’s not foolproof.
Second, if the bcm does not completely turn off because it senses the key, it may drain your car’s battery.
Third, all of the crap hanging off your key will damage your tumbler.
One possible explanation is that the tumbler has become damaged as a result of severe wear from the weight hanging off the key, leading the bcm to believe that the key has been removed.
Another possibility is that your car battery is degrading because the bcm is always in standby mode, resulting in a poor signal received from the keyfob, so it no longer believes the key is present.
BCM fails because it is always in standby mode.
A simple digital fault in the system.
In the future, I recommend that you remove all of the attachments from the key, cease leaving the key in the ignition when you are not using the vehicle, and turn off the bcm while not in use.
Appreciate In my defense, this is my partner’s key. Mine only has my house keys on it , however, my partner told me to stop keeping my keys in it lol.
More to the point, it’s a very bold move from the “expecting my car to not get stolen” standpoint.
You are not supposed to leave the keys in the ignition.
When your car is stolen my friend you won’t like it at all I am telling you.
Some new keys have a built in motion sensor basically if the key is in the car and hasn’t moved for a while it essentially stops transmitting not allowing you to unlock or lock the vehicle or start. Personally I’ve only seen it on keyless entry fobs, but maybe the tech is included as it’s a fairly new car.
Wait there is ignition on a 2021 Trax but in 2017 there’s the push to start?
I guess so but I’ve seen two different models of the Trax
