I recently purchased a 2008 Chevy Express 2500 with 12k miles for under 120k miles. It is in excellent condition and was a terrific deal. I want to modify it so that I may live on the road part-time and work in construction and rigging. I really like the van, but the drop-down ladder rack is something I don’t really need. For moving timber and other supplies, I would much rather have a standard roof rack. Should I try to sell the drop down roof rack and acquire a new standard rack, or can I use it to move lumber?
My suggestion is that just sell the drop-down ladder rack. If you find that you don’t need the drop-down feature, selling it could be a good idea. These racks are often in demand among professionals who frequently use ladders, so you might get a decent price for them. You can then use the proceeds to purchase a standard roof rack that better suits your needs for transporting timber and other supplies.
If the ladder rack isn’t your thing, you could definitely sell it as @Jane suggested and grab a roof rack that fits your needs better. But honestly, you might be able to make the drop-down work for lumber too—just depends on how much you’re hauling. I had a similar setup once, and it worked out fine for smaller loads. Either way, go with what feels right for your projects
