Rear differentials in an old Express... need advice?

Hey everyone, I recently got this old 2001 Chevy Express 1500 for a bargain—basically free with a trade. It has about 170,000 miles and some moderate rust issues underneath. Most of it seems fine for a few years, but there’s one spot that’s concerning: the rear differential housing looks a bit rough. There’s no leak, and when I poke at it, it feels solid, but I’m worried since I doubt the differential oil has ever been changed. I’m assuming it hasn’t. My question is, if it has never been changed, should I just go ahead and change it now and hope everything is fine, or do you think the age and mileage without maintenance mean I should save up for a replacement? I’m also concerned about the rust and the risk of not being able to reseal it if I change it now. I’ve never changed differential fluid before, but I’m willing to learn. What do you think? What are the odds I could just change the fluid and be good? PS: I can provide pictures tomorrow if anyone’s interested.

I’d definitely change the fluid. It might help prolong the life of the differential, but keep an eye on it after.

Honestly, if the housing is looking rough, you might want to replace it. Better safe than sorry, right?

Changing the fluid is a good start. I did that on my old truck, and it worked out fine.

I’d suggest taking some pictures of the housing. It might help others give better advice.

Changing the fluid is definitely worth a shot. Just be ready for the possibility of needing a replacement later.
