I was thinking about getting a 2020 Chevy Malibu as my first car. I’m 16 and looking for something reliable. Does anyone have thoughts on this? Is it a good choice or should I look for something else?
It really depends on the miles and how well it’s been maintained. If both look good, it’s not a bad option.
The big question is will it be affordable? Try looking for cars around $5k. They can run well and will teach you how to handle small problems yourself when they come up.
I’ve had my first car for 9 years now, a 2000 Mustang. If it’s reliable and within budget, go for it!
Yes, it’s a solid option!
At 16, just make sure you have enough for insurance too. It can get expensive. But the car itself looks clean—just make sure you’re getting the right deal!

If it’s the version with the EcoTech engine, I’d stay away. Get a GM with a V6 or at least a non-turbo model.
My buddy has a CT4 with a turbo and it’s been reliable, but yeah, that’s just one story.
No way, too new for a first car.
I didn’t realize it was a 2020. Maybe it’s not too bad, but I agree with others that it might set a high expectation for a first car.
I disagree with some folks here. All of my kids got new cars or CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) cars, purely for the warranty. At least you know they’ll last through college.
If you have the money, there are better options out there for a first car.
If it’s got a V6, then yes. If it’s the 4-cylinder turbo, I’d avoid it. Those tend to have a lot of issues.
