I have a 2015 Chevy Cruze, and it wouldn’t start yesterday. The picture shows the dash. I’ve tried various methods to reset or unlock the car, but nothing has worked. The key fob battery was replaced last night, and I disconnected the battery for a few minutes, but I haven’t checked the fuses yet since I couldn’t find one labeled specifically for the theft alarm. Please help!
I’m a licensed locksmith. The battery in your key fob doesn’t affect the car’s immobilizer system much unless you’re using the fob to start the car instead of turning a key in the ignition. Inside the fob, there’s a small chip about the size of your pinky nail, usually soldered to the board, especially for GM keys like yours, which I assume is a switchblade style. If the key has gotten wet, been dropped frequently, or if the buttons have caved in allowing debris to enter, that chip could be damaged. If the immobilizer can’t detect the chip, the car won’t start. Do the lock, unlock, and panic buttons still work, or is the key completely nonfunctional?
If all the buttons are still functioning and it’s a switchblade style, you’ll likely need to get a completely new key fob to make it work.
I’d recommend trying to have your local locksmith reprogram your existing key to your vehicle before you decide to get a completely new key.
Call someone to check it, perhaps your local locksmith. I can’t really estimate how much it will cost you though.
The cost will vary greatly depending on who you contact. For my company, something like that would be under $200, provided we can come out to you during business hours.
