After receiving some excellent advice, I gathered everything I need to replace the spark plugs in my 2015 myself.
However, when I remove the coils and try to unscrew the old spark plugs with a 5/8 spark plug socket wrench, they won’t budge. I’m applying significant force counterclockwise, but there’s no movement. I’ve encountered this problem with multiple coils, so I don’t think it’s just one being stuck.
Do you have any suggestions? I’m worried about applying too much force and breaking the plug off in the cylinder, which would be a costly mistake. Should I just apply more pressure?
I just replaced the plugs on my 2013, and cylinders 3 and 4 were slightly rusted and quite crunchy.
Try again after heating the engine by driving it for a while.
I attempted to remove the ignition plugs when the engine was cold, but none of them budged. After driving the vehicle and heating the engine sufficiently, I tried removing them again, and all the ignition plugs came out easily.
It’s quite common for screws on various machines, including engines, to get stuck and not release. In such cases, mechanics often use a torch or heat gun to heat that area before trying again.
If you forcefully try to remove the ignition plug and it breaks inside the engine, there’s no going back. In that situation, you’ll need to use a screw extractor (which requires a visit to a repair shop) or possibly replace the entire cylinder head.
So, heat the engine by driving it enough and then attempt to remove the plugs immediately. If they still won’t come off, I suggest visiting a repair shop.
I changed mine a few weeks ago, and they were also seized. I applied some elbow grease and used the tighten, loosen, tighten, loosen method to get them out (if that makes sense).
Apply some anti-seize to the new ones so you won’t have to face this issue again.
Use an impact tool; the shock from the impact will help break free any carbon buildup or debris.
