My wife and I are considering buying the new Tahoe because she wants to fit in with the suburban middle-class moms in the neighborhood. The 3.0L Duramax engine caught her eye, and I’m trying to do some research on this engine since it’ll be our first diesel. How reliable is this engine, and what are the pros and cons? I’d love to hear from anyone who has experience with it.
I love this engine. It has great power. I’ve put over 20k miles on my ZR2 with the 3.0L, and I’ve never had an issue. I’ve owned some of the smaller diesels GM put out over the years. Unlike the old Colorado, this one has plenty of power and more than enough torque to get the job done. My dad has one in his Silverado, and he has over 15k miles with no problems either. We were both diehard V8 fans, but we probably won’t go back now with how much we love the 3.0 Duramax.
Just make sure you actually go out and drive it. Lots of short trips can wreak havoc on the regen, EGR, and particulate systems. That’s something to keep in mind with diesel engines.
I’ve heard good things about the 3.0L Duramax too. The fuel efficiency is usually better than a gas engine, which is a plus if you drive a lot. Just be aware of the maintenance costs, as diesel engines can be pricier to maintain over time.
One downside I’ve heard is that diesel fuel can be harder to find in some areas. It’s not a big deal for most places, but it’s worth considering.
Overall, I think you’ll be happy with the 3.0L Duramax. Just make sure to follow the maintenance schedule, and it should serve you well. Diesel engines can be a great choice for long-term use.
