Hey gearheads,
I’m thinking about getting a car with a Chevy 305 engine and wanted to hear from folks who have experience with it. How’s the performance and reliability? Any tips or common issues I should be aware of?
Hey gearheads,

A common issue with the 305 engine is overheating, particularly if the cooling system is not properly maintained. The intake manifold gasket is known to occasionally develop leaks, so it is something to keep an eye on.
The Chevy 305 engine has long been regarded for its durability and simplicity, making it an excellent choice for both everyday use and restoration efforts. It’s dependable and simple to operate with, which is a significant benefit.
It is reliable and good for towing, but lacks power compared to the 350. Regular maintenance is key.
I had one in a car with the 305 and it was OK; even after one day, it had 10 pounds of oil pressure and never above that. I drove it for months before I could afford to install a pump. It never failed or made an unusual noise. After I installed a new oil pump, it had 10 PSI per 1000 RPM and worked smoothly for years. There were no visible impacts from the time of low oil pressure.
