Weird clunking noise... CVT failing?

I have got a 2015 Chevy Spark that’s been solid until today. Started noticing a weird clunking sound when I accelerated at low speeds, especially in low range. There’s also a subtle grinding noise, and it happens whether I’m going straight or turning. No issues with hesitation so far, but it’s kind of concerning. Has anyone else experienced a clunking noise like this during CVT failure? It’s covered by the special extended warranty, luckily.

Sounds almost like a CV joint or maybe a wheel bearing starting to fail.

What kind of clunking are we talking about?

When my CVT went, the main thing I noticed was a lot of jerkiness when changing gears, especially going from reverse to drive. Sometimes there was a clunk, but not always.

If it’s still shifting smoothly and no acceleration hesitation, it might not be the CVT just yet. Could be worth checking the transmission fluid for any debris—if there’s stuff in there, it’s a sign of damage.

It’s a really solid clunking when I hit the gas, mainly at lower speeds. Almost like when a truck’s u-joint is bad. Plus, there’s this grinding/slipping feeling, like when a bike’s gears aren’t quite right. No prior issues. After an oil change, this started happening the next day. It’s a bit worse when cold.

I’ll let the dealership handle it. It’s covered under warranty, so fingers crossed it’s not a major headache.

Good luck with the dealership! Mine took forever—two months for a CVT repair. Hopefully yours is quicker.

Fingers crossed! Not getting my hopes up too much. Vegas dealerships aren’t exactly known for speedy service.

@Blair
I feel you. I had mine done in Vegas too, at Team Chevy. Heard the Henderson location might be quicker.

Unfortunately, I’m at Team Chevy. They were the closest, and I didn’t want to risk the freeway with this issue. It’s actually a Turo rental, so as long as they fix it, I’m good. Vegas dealers are the worst!

@Blair
Oh man, I had a similar experience. The tech tried to dismiss my issue at first. I had to insist on a transmission specialist. Turned out I was right, but the delay was rough. Keep calling for updates—they’re not the best at keeping you in the loop.
