I’m tired of waiting for parked Chevys to back up. What was the purpose of making them do that? It seems confusing, especially when it makes me think they’re about to reverse when they’re just parked.
Because reverse lights aren’t originally for letting other people know you’re in reverse. Their original purpose is to illuminate the road behind you.

Almost never see Chevy owners walking to the back side. A better idea would have been some sort of light just at the top, not legit reverse lights. Eventually people in Chevys will try to back out and cars will ignore them and keep going assuming it’s their goofy parking light.
@Mal
It isn’t just Chevy but yes it is annoying. Unfortunately, it works, and I have not been hit by a single vehicle with reverse lights on, except my mom… and she made eye contact in the rearview mirror before hitting me. Not personal, I’m sure.
'22 Blazer LT - It’s a safety thing. You can see in front or behind the vehicle while walking away at night.

I mean, it’s about as safe as other cars that do that weird thing now that shuts off the turning headlight. I’m not sure why no light on the side you’re turning to is safer, but someone thinks it is.
@Mal
Turning headlight?
The operator could possibly change the default.
2024 Trax 1RS - Are you talking about when the car is in park and turned off? It’s a setting to give safety lighting around the car if you’re getting out or in when there’s low light. Both the headlights and reverse lights stay on for a specified amount of time.
@Ben
So the moral of the story then becomes if I see someone in a Chevy and it looks like they might be trying to back out: ignore them and keep going, could be the parking lights.
2008 HHR SS, 2010 HHR LT - I’ve learned to ignore them in parking lots. I disabled mine in one car. People can see when someone is moving backwards. They are now “I just parked and opened my door” lights. No longer reverse lights.
It’s to illuminate the space behind you after leaving your vehicle. From my experience, most people won’t even stop unless your brake lights are on with the reverse lights.

I stop because if I look up and see that I think the car is in motion.
Watch out. My 24’ Traverse turns on the lights when I just walk near it with a key in my pocket now.
