I’m prepping for a hurricane and, naturally, I waited until the last minute to look for a generator, but they’re all sold out. Will the bed outlet on my truck be able to power a 115v deep freezer? I can’t find clear info anywhere, and I’m definitely not an electrical expert.
Edit: I have a 2023 1500 RST.
Right off the bat, I’d say it’s unlikely. Although the compressor doesn’t use much current when running, the startup current will be significantly higher.
It’s highly unlikely. I believe the outlet is only rated for 400W continuous, which might allow for around 800W at peak.
Without any information at all, how could anyone possibly provide an answer to this?
No, freezers and refrigerators consume a significant amount of power, especially during startup. While it’s not an excessive amount, it’s definitely more than the 400 watts that the outlets can provide.
Fortunately, a deep freezer can keep food frozen for a few days if it’s packed properly and you don’t open it frequently.
Yeah, the truck outlets can be quite finicky. I can run a Dremel off one, and sometimes a smaller 5-amp angle grinder works, but the same 5-amp older angle grinder trips it. My wife drives long-distance in a Chevy 3500 and uses a little egg cooker that’s supposed to be 100 watts, but it trips the truck inverter. I installed a 1000-watt inverter behind the seat with two spare AGM batteries in the bed, so now she can cook eggs without any issues. She should be able to run a 700-watt microwave (I tested it at home), but we’re struggling to find a spot to fit it!
