2014 Equinox... What's Wrong with the Oil Pan?

I just got a 2014 Equinox for my grandparents. The timing chain was replaced in 2023. We changed a VVT solenoid right after buying it because it was idling rough and triggered a code. There were metal shavings around the intake solenoid. After that, we changed the oil and found even more metal shavings. Now there seems to be a bolt or something stuck in the oil pan, and it’s too big to pull out. We plan to drop the pan tomorrow. Anyone have insights or similar experiences? Check out the photos. Otherwise, the car drives fine.

That metal is in the oil system. This could be serious. The crank bearings might be damaged and that could be what you’re hearing in the pan.

So, is the whole car ruined?

Well, the engine for sure, or most of it. Are you ready to pay for a rebuild or drop 4-5k on a new one? What model is it, the 2.0, 2.2 or 2.4?

It’s a 2.4.

You could find a used engine from several models like HHR, Cobalt, or some Saturns. If the car is in great shape or has a rare color, a new engine might be worth it. You could also have a mechanic check the damage and repair options.

Swapping an engine costs about $1,000 in labor, plus the engine itself. You need to decide if it’s worth it or if looking for another vehicle makes more sense.

Also, the source of the metal matters. I’d suggest having a mechanic check where the metal came from. Were there any previous codes? Did it run low on oil? Was the timing off?

How’s the compression on each cylinder? Maybe swap the oil, replace the solenoids, clean the oil pan and pick-up tube, check the timing cover for issues, and drive it a bit to see if more metal appears. Consider getting a magnetic oil pan plug to catch shavings too.

Looks like the engine is toast.

But it drives fine right now?

Keep driving it… but it’s just a matter of time.

That’s a lot of metal pieces, and some are pretty big. If it’s at the solenoid, that means those bits have been circulating through your engine instead of being caught by the oil filter. I’d guess there’s a 90% chance the bearings inside are damaged or will be, with all that metal in there. If it drives fine, keep using it, but avoid long trips for now.
