I’m looking to see if anyone else has had a similar problem or can guide me in the proper path before I start ordering parts.
When my Malibu accelerates, it produces a loud buzzing sound and vibrates. I’ve also heard a clicking sound when driving. It will occasionally flare up while I’m just riding down the interstate. My initial thinking was about the CV axles. However, the boots are not damaged and no grease is escaping. They’re rusty from all the Chicago winters, though.
Maintenance-wise, I adhere to a strict timetable to ensure that everything is up to date. There are no codes, and Chevy says it’s in excellent mechanical condition, so I’m leaning towards the axles.
That is what I thought at first. However, there is no play in the wheel or the ABS light. I had a mechanic look at them, and he indicated that if they are failing, they haven’t failed sufficiently for him to determine the problem because they sound normal when he listens with his stethoscope.
I worked on a Grand Prix a few years ago. He replaced the hub bearings on each wheels about 10,000 miles before. There was no movement above 10,000 rpm, and driving it over 50-55 mph produced a grinding roar. We warrantied the bearings for one year. We changed them, and the sound went away. The old ones were slightly twisted, most likely due to potholes or curb checks.
I think I will get those then. I’m almost 100% sure it’s the front driver side. It getting bent slightly seems plausible it started on a hot day after a car wash.
