Hey guys, I am new to this forum, so if you know a better place to ask, let me know.
I’ve got a 2003 Silverado 2500HD with a 6.0L engine. My brother has the same truck, and we’ve had this rivalry going on. We decided that every year at Christmas, we’ll race when he comes to visit. The rule is we can modify two performance-related things each year, but other mods like paint or lifts don’t count.
Last year, he beat me off the line. Our trucks are mostly stock except for a few mods:
Mine:
-K&N cold air intake
-Performance coils and plugs
-Lifted 2 inches
His:
-Cold air intake vortex
-Throttle body spacer
-Lifted 2 inches
I’ve been looking into getting better acceleration off the line. I was thinking of getting a cam but don’t know much about them. Any recommendations? Thanks for any help!
There’s an old trick that says, ‘just remove weight.’ Taking stuff out can improve power-to-weight ratio and even help fuel economy. And honestly, if you aren’t looking for loopholes in racing, are you really trying?
You could try things like removing the tonneau cover or dropping the tailgate for better aero. Or just take it off altogether to lose some weight.
Do you really need the AC and heater? You could say they broke, and you didn’t feel like fixing them. Might sneak that past the rules.
And you don’t need passenger seats for racing, right? Get yourself a lightweight seat for race day.
*Disclaimer: I’m not a professional mechanic, just giving ideas.

Haha, I’m already doing that with my project truck. But yeah, for these races, both trucks are still daily drivers. Still, I can probably remove the seats and tailgate for race day, so thanks for the tip!
