Draining the coolant reservoir tank on a 2019 Colorado

Hello everyone. My daughter’s coolant surge tank is draining entirely from the hole near the heater outlet hose. I’ve highlighted it in orange in images 1 and 2. Everything else seems to be in good condition.

When I say draining, I mean it—coolant was poured in and went straight through.

Any advice would be appreciated. I’m not sure how this occurred. She was driving when the warnings came up on her truck. She attempted to refill it, and this is the situation we’re in now.

That’s the overpressure vent on the tank. Fluid will be expelled from the cap into the vent and out through the bottom of the tank.

If coolant is being forced out by the engine, you might need to check your engine and head gasket.

I’m not a tech, but are those holes in the reservoir shown in picture 2? The original poster mentioned that any coolant poured in would immediately leak out.

If the reservoir can’t maintain pressure, it could still cause an overheating issue, even if there’s coolant left in the system, right?

That’s an overflow tank, which isn’t designed to be filled.

Oops, that’s definitely beyond my expertise. I’ll have it towed to a mechanic tomorrow. It drives, but I’d prefer not to make the situation worse.

It’s interesting because this is the first time it’s been completely empty. Normally, you can see coolant level about halfway up.
