Hi all, my boyfriend and I replaced the engine air filter in my 2022 Spark last week. Now the car revs higher than usual on startup, and I’ve even heard some popping noises. This only happens when the engine is cold, but I’m worried something’s wrong. Could it be because we didn’t install the filter correctly? Appreciate any insights!
How clogged was the old filter? Sometimes a new one lets more air in, which could explain the higher revs. I’d also double-check that everything’s sealed up tight.

I’d say check that the airbox and hoses are all reconnected properly. The computer might need to re-learn airflow settings, so it could settle after a few drives.
@Rowen
Thanks! I didn’t notice anything loose, but I’ll double-check. I’m not getting any engine codes either, which is good I guess. I’m in Texas, so it’s not super cold here.
Could be the intake tube or maybe the mass airflow sensor got disconnected? Any engine lights?

No lights or codes! It’s just the high revving on a cold start.
I’d say check that the air box is properly closed and that all hoses are connected. Sometimes they can come loose when you change the filter.
Sounds like your engine’s getting more air now. That’ll make it rev higher at first.
Also, check the hose after the air sensor. If it’s cracked, more air could be getting in than the sensor reads, which would throw things off.
