So I accidentally grabbed the wrong key (for my 1998 Chevy S10) and tried it on my other truck, a 1998 Chevy Blazer. To my surprise, the door unlocked! It didn’t work in the ignition, but now I’m wondering if this is a common thing with similar makes/models or if my key is just worn out and needs replacing. Has anyone else experienced something like this?
I wouldn’t worry too much about it, your secret is safe with us!

Haha, I’ll take your word for it. Thanks for easing my mind!
Maybe both trucks were keyed the same? I once had a retired fleet cop car, and in some cases, fleet cars had similar key patterns. I heard in forums that some agencies keyed their whole fleet the same way, so it’s not impossible for something like this to happen.
@Eli
That’s an interesting point, I hadn’t thought about that. I guess there’s always a chance of similar keys, especially with older models. Makes me feel a little better about it.
How similar are the keys? Sometimes a worn key can open similar locks, especially if the locks are a bit old or worn themselves.

They’re pretty similar in length and the number of notches, give or take. I guess wear and tear could explain it.
@Ashton
Yeah, sounds like either the key or the lock mechanism is worn down. Might be worth keeping an eye on, but nothing too urgent unless it starts affecting your ignition.
If it’s not working in the ignition, it’s probably just the door locks being a bit worn. That’s pretty common with older vehicles.

That makes sense, thanks for the clarification! I’ll keep an eye on it, but at least I’m not dealing with a bigger issue.
