I have a question about my stereo... need advice?

I drive a 2013 Impala, and my stock head unit is broken. I have a CD stuck in there, so I decided to get a new head unit. I’d like one that can play cassettes, and I’ve been looking at a unit made for Silverados and vans from the 2000s. Is it possible for the cassette unit to fit where my current one is? If so, would I need to rewire anything? Thanks in advance.

Crutchfield.com… trust me

Yep. Buy once cry once man. Get yourself a decent head double din from Crutchfield. Don’t go cheap, it’s not worth the headache: the Bluetooth will be finicky, the CarPlay may or may not work all the time. Just pony up a good $400+ and bite the bullet.

Nice, I might just get a CarPlay unit. The airbag light above the stereo, I had an idea a while back to replace that with a tape player (I’m an old bastard at heart) but realistically I don’t think that would work.

Crutchfield was so good to me. If I ever need a radio again, 100% going through them. My Kenwood single DIN was on sale and it came with all the wires, a diagram, and the adapter for free.

Those 2 aren’t compatible.

They are not compatible. Upgrade to an aftermarket system with CarPlay/Android Auto.

It wouldn’t plug right in; you’d need to make an adapter/harness, and even then, all the wires might not match up. In theory, it’s probably possible, but it would require too much messing around to be worth it. Just get an aftermarket double DIN radio. You can get fancy ones with touch screens and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay for less than 200 bucks.

And burn $100+ an hour for labor for something anyone can do? You can get an aftermarket head unit, install kit, and an adapter to fit your car’s harness (if you’re scared to cut into it). Soldering is optimal, but head unit/speaker wires you can get away with just twisting them together and heat shrink. Don’t listen to this guy.

Just get an Alexa Echo Auto and plug her into that aux jack - it connects to your phone over Bluetooth and will play all your phone’s audio, do Alexa commands, and answer and make phone calls all with good bass and quality! 10/15$ on eBay!

Haven’t done it, but I’m sure you need a security key from the other vehicle. With that, I don’t think it will be a direct plug and play; you may need to re-pin the old harness plug.

I still have some too.

You could make it work, but it would be redneck engineered to hell, some Ginger Billy looking stuff. I thoroughly enjoy installing car audio systems, but what you’re talking about I wouldn’t take on that project.

You’ll likely have to reprogram it at the dealership, which will not be cheap. It will be cheaper to get an aftermarket unit with a steering wheel control module and all parts needed.

10000% will not work. Very different systems.

I have the second pic, the CD/tape player in my '04, but the CD is stuck and only the left side channel works; the right sometimes does.

I liked my eonon unit. It just plugged straight into the factory harness and worked fabulously, but it didn’t have a cassette player.

What’s the chances there’s a variant that does? It’s not a requirement for me, but I have so many tapes and no way to play them in the car.

Nope, 99-06 full-size trucks and vans use a class 2 serial data connection to communicate with the BCM (body control module). The radio in your car uses GMLAN, IIRC, which isn’t compatible. There are naughty ways you could make it work (connecting a donor truck BCM to switched power and only connecting the radio), but it would be super janky.

I just looked and didn’t see anything for cassettes :frowning:
