My 1994 Chevy G20 van’s speedometer flickers and the battery dies when I put it in drive… Could it be the alternator or wiring?

I have got this issue with my van, when I start it up, the speedometer flickers, and as soon as I put it in drive and move, the battery dies. I am leaning toward the alternator, but I am open to other ideas. Has anyone had similar problems?

I have noticed with my GM, whenever the battery gets weak, I start seeing random electrical issues like windows not working right. I’ve replaced two batteries in 9 years, so I’d start with checking the battery and wires first before jumping to the alternator.

I replaced the battery in December when I bought the van. Around March, I replaced it again. Not sure if it’s related.

I actually replaced the battery back in December when I bought the van. Around March, I replaced it again. Not sure if it’s related.

You’ve already covered what I would check first. I wish I had more to add, but it does sound like you’re on the right track.

I once had a similar issue, and it turned out to be a grounding problem. Maybe double-check that all the connections are solid.
