Please delete if not allowed. I’m not sure what sedan Saturday means (can I not post truck questions today?). I know almost nothing about trucks, but I need to keep an eye on transmission temperature while towing 4000lbs from Maine to Texas. I have a couple questions: Is there a built-in transmission temp sensor? I know there’s not a dedicated gauge, but it looks like you can pull it up on the screen on the dash. Is that a reliable reading? Would it be advised to change the thermostat out with a newer one? Should I get a transmission cooler installed? I’ve heard about a “thermal bypass mod,” but I don’t want to mess anything up by doing it myself. Is this a good alternative to putting in a cooler? Money isn’t exactly overflowing, but I also don’t want to get stuck broken down in Tennessee. Thanks!
The thermostat mod is good for longevity of the trans. I’d do it if you have the money; it’s cheap and easy to install. Other than that, make sure your tires are in good shape and inflated on the truck and trailer. Get your tongue weight sorted and ensure the brake controller and lights are functioning properly.
What do you mean by get my tongue weight sorted?
Ensuring the tongue weight of the trailer isn’t exceeding the payload of the truck and that the trailer sits nice and level once you’re loaded.
10% of trailer weight on the hitch (tongue) is ideal. More weight ahead of the trailer axle than behind. Too much weight behind the trailer axle will lead to instability.
Just change the fluid and filter, man.
