Noticed a metal rod sticking out of my shocks, help!

Has anyone experienced this? What should I do?
Here is a picture of my shock with a metal rod sticking out of it:

Could be age, a lift, or poor quality. Lots of things can cause this.

That’s a bad day. You’re probably going to need a tow.

Time to upgrade to some Bilsteins! But that really sucks, man.

So just a new set of strut and shock assembly and it should be good to drive?

If that’s the only issue, then yeah. Just replace them and get an alignment. Not too hard if you’re handy.

Thanks, it seems to just be the shock. I noticed it while trying to fix some rubbing between the wheels and fender. My buddy pointed this out to me!

Definitely looks like the strut. Maybe a big jump or something caused it to pop out?

Looks like you’ve got the ReadyLift kit. I had the same thing happen with mine over a small bump.

That’s wild! Did you stick with the same kit?

I swapped the shocks for Eibach and drove it for another year. I did notice some clicking in the CV axle, but it lasted until I upgraded to a 5.5" Zone lift last month. Just replaced the CV axle today.

How are the Eibachs? I’m looking for something smoother than stock without lifting too much.

They’re decent, but don’t expect a huge difference in ride quality.

Same thing happened to my truck over a small bump in sand. Should be around $500-600 to fix with an alignment at a good shop, or you could do it yourself for about $150 and then get an alignment for around $80.

@Uma
Thanks! I’m planning to do it with a friend.

Good plan! Don’t forget to use jack stands for safety.

Make sure to do both sides. Does your lift kit call for longer shocks?

The second pic looks like someone lost a ratchet and left the handle sticking out!

Haha, unfortunately not!

I haven’t had this exact issue, but after my ZR2’s DSSV shocks failed at under 40k miles, I switched to Kings. They aren’t cheap, but they’re worth it.

Looks like we’ve got the same tires—Mickey Thompsons? Love mine. Your strut’s done for though, be careful when disassembling it.
