Programming an RKE for my 2022 Malibu... need some help

Hey everyone, I just bought a 2022 Malibu that only came with one key fob. I got a matching fob and found some instructions on how to program it. The first step says to put the key in the door and turn it 5 times. My question is: is there any special relationship between the fob and the physical key? Can I use the existing key to enter programming mode and then program the new fob? I want to avoid paying to get the key cut since I can’t find a reasonable quote.

No, there’s no special relationship between the fob and the physical key. Yes, you can use the existing key to enter programming mode and then program the new fob.

Awesome, thanks for the clarification!

Just a heads up, even if you can program the fob, you still need to get the key cut. That’s your emergency backup if the remote or car battery dies.

Yeah, I get that. Just trying to save some cash for now.

Make sure to follow the instructions carefully. Programming can be tricky sometimes, but it sounds like you’re on the right track!

If you have any issues, check online for videos. Sometimes seeing it done can help a lot.

Good luck! Let us know if it works out. I’m curious to hear how it goes.
