Remote transponder programming help? Confused about the third key

So I recently bought a used 2020 Blazer RS from a local dealer, but it only came with one key/remote. I went ahead and bought a replacement and followed the instructions in the owner’s manual to forget all the previously programmed remotes and set up the new ones. Everything worked great, except now it says 3 remotes are programmed, but I only programmed 2. Is there a hidden key somewhere in my car? Or could it be counting the remote start through the Chevy app as a third key? Has anyone else had this issue before, and if so, how did you resolve it? I’m considering reprogramming the remotes again, but the process takes over 30 minutes, so I’m wondering if it’s worth going through it again. Any advice is appreciated!

I’ve had a similar issue before with my Chevy. In my case, the Chevy app was counting as an extra remote. I’d say double-check the app to see if it’s being registered as a third key. It could be that, instead of a physical remote hiding somewhere.

@Wil
That’s kind of what I was thinking too. I’ll definitely check the app to see if it’s being counted. Did you just leave it as-is, or did you try reprogramming everything again?

I left it as-is since the app works just fine and it didn’t cause any problems. If everything’s functioning normally for you, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

@Wil
Good to know! I’ll probably leave it alone then if everything’s working okay. Thanks for the advice!

It could definitely be the remote start from the app being counted as a third key. I’ve seen that happen before. If it’s working fine, I wouldn’t worry about it. Reprogramming could just end up taking time without solving anything since you’re not missing any functionality.

@Junita
That’s what I was thinking too—seems like the app is the likely culprit. I’d rather avoid the hassle of reprogramming unless it becomes a real issue. Thanks for the input!

I’d also recommend checking with the dealership just to be sure. They might be able to confirm if the app is being counted as the third remote or if something else is going on. If you want peace of mind, they can probably do a quick scan to see what’s registered.

@Wylie
That’s a good idea. I’ll give them a call to see if they can clarify things. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to have them check it out while I’m still within my warranty period.

I had this happen with my Silverado, and it was exactly what you’re describing. The Chevy app remote start was counted as an additional key. If your remotes and the app are both working, I wouldn’t waste time reprogramming them. It’s likely not a big deal.

@Del
Thanks, sounds like the app being counted is the most common explanation. I think I’ll leave it for now unless it starts causing issues.
