Hey everyone, I’m looking at buying a 2012 Chevy Cruze LS 1.8L with 111k miles for $5k. It’s got one owner, no accidents, and seems to be in good condition. I’ve never owned a Chevy before and I’m curious about this model—how reliable are they? How long do they typically last? Any specific things I should look out for with this car? Thanks for the advice!
The 2012 Cruze can be a decent car, but keep in mind that the 1.8L engine has been known for some issues, particularly with the cooling system. At 111k miles, I’d ask for a maintenance record and see if any major services, like the water pump or timing belt, have been done. $5k sounds fair if everything checks out, but definitely get it inspected first!
@Orion
Thanks! I’ll make sure to ask about the maintenance and get it inspected. Appreciate the heads up about the cooling system.
I’ve owned the same model for about 7 years now. It’s been a solid car for me, but like CarGuy57 said, keep an eye on the cooling system. I had to replace the water pump around 90k miles. Other than that, regular maintenance and oil changes have kept it running well. For $5k, it sounds like a good deal, especially with no accidents.
@Tennyson
Good to know it’s been reliable for you! Did you have any other major repairs or just the water pump?

Other than the water pump, nothing major. I did have to replace the thermostat at one point, but that’s a fairly common issue on these cars. Overall, it’s been smooth sailing.
Chevy Cruze from that generation can last a long time if it’s been taken care of. 111k miles isn’t too high, but make sure to check for any signs of oil leaks or transmission issues. The 1.8L is known to develop some oil leaks over time. I’d say get a mechanic to give it a once-over before you buy.
@Blayne
Will do! I’ll definitely have a mechanic check for any leaks or issues. Thanks for the advice!
I’d say go for it if everything checks out. The price seems reasonable for that mileage, and if it’s a one-owner car with no accidents, that’s a good sign. Just be ready for some small repairs down the road with that many miles on it.
@Micah
That’s kind of what I’m thinking too. I expect some repairs, but hopefully nothing too crazy. Thanks!
Make sure you check the transmission carefully. Some Cruzes had issues with transmission slippage, especially as they aged. A test drive should give you a good feel for it. If it shifts smoothly and feels good, then $5k is a good price.
@Olin
Thanks for the tip! I’ll pay extra attention to how it shifts during the test drive.
