Thinking about a 2001 Chevy Metro... is it a good idea?

Hey folks, I’m considering buying a 2001 Chevy Metro LSI. It has 90k miles and has been garage-kept for the last three years, looking amazing for a Metro. The seller mentioned that everything works perfectly. I’m curious about how good of an idea this purchase would be. If anyone has owned a Metro or knows someone who has, how did the car treat you? Was it reliable? Do you think it’s a worthwhile purchase?

Metros had a bit of a renaissance a few years back when fuel prices went crazy. People were hunting them down and prices rose. That trend has cooled off now, but they are great economy cars for saving money. If you look at it as cheap transportation, it’s a decent ride. Not a Ferrari or Rolls Royce, but reliable and inexpensive to own. If the price is right and it meets your needs, I’d say go for it.

@Harley
That makes a lot of sense. I guess if you just need something to get from point A to B, it’s a solid choice.

Hopefully it has a manual transmission. Those are way more fun to drive.

I’m not sure yet. I’m trying to get in touch with the seller. Is the automatic really that bad?

Well, for a small engine, the manual would definitely get the most out of it. Might even be a fun little car to drive around.

I was taught manual before anything else, so it would be nice to have a reliable manual daily. If I go for it, I’m hoping to maybe put a smaller turbo on it for a bit more power.

That sounds like a fun project. A little turbo could really wake it up.

I averaged about 50 miles per gallon with mine, even when driving uphill a lot. It lasted 265,000 miles before I finally had to let it go.

Did you have any major issues with it?

@Jules
I didn’t love replacing the drum brakes. I remember it costing more than what I paid for the car, but overall I drove it into the ground. The locks didn’t work, and the seat wouldn’t stay up, but I still got like $500 for it when I sold it.

So it sounds like you had a pretty good experience overall?

Yup, if you need a reliable economy car that gets you from A to B with great gas mileage, a Geo Metro is a solid choice.

All caps nonsense for a vehicle you don’t even own… just saying.

IDK, it seems like a lot of people have had good experiences. Just trying to gather opinions here.
