Thinking of picking up an Avalanche for under $6,000 as my first personal vehicle... Thoughts?

Hey, everyone. I’ve been looking at some used Chevy Avalanches going for under $6,000 and thinking it might be a solid first personal vehicle. Seems like they’re reliable and cheap to work on. But I’m wondering if there’s a catch since they’re selling for so little? Are there common issues I should know about, or any maintenance concerns? Appreciate any advice or insight you can offer. Thanks!

@Brenner
That sounds pretty promising. I like the idea of the extra storage and fold-down seats for hauling stuff. Good to know maintenance hasn’t been an issue for him either. How’s it holding up for towing and general reliability?

@Cale
I’m definitely more focused on reliability than the fancy features, so I’m glad to hear that’s not a dealbreaker. And yeah, the looks are kind of quirky, but I can live with that if it’s a solid truck. Thanks for the tip on the headlights—good to know they’re that reliable.

One more thing to note—there are 1500 and 2500 versions. If you’re planning on hauling heavy stuff or towing, go for the 2500. It has a beefier transmission, the 4L80E, compared to the 4L60E in the 1500. Just something to think about if you’re planning to use it for heavy-duty work.

@Eliot
Good to know! I’m not planning on anything super heavy right now, but I’ll keep that in mind in case my needs change. Thanks for the heads-up.
