Wanting a Suburban, but unsure

Hey guys, so I really love full-sized SUVs. I’m a young man at 23, and I’m unsure if I should get one as I’ve heard they’re pretty unreliable for the years I’m looking at, which is 2015-2016. I’m checking out a 2016 LT with around 150,000 miles for $16,500. Was wondering if anyone has experience with these years and can either encourage or discourage me lol. Any advice would be super helpful, I’m mechanically inclined! Thanks and happy new year!!

Dude, I’m just a little older but wanted something similar a few years ago. I ended up waiting and saving to get a newer model with less mileage. I’m really glad I went that route. Just got a 2022 Silverado this week with low mileage and a warranty. Feels way more stable!

Noted, thanks for the words, brother! I appreciate you.

Just so you know, MY15 was the first year of the K2xx SUVs, which was a complete redesign, not just a facelift. The newer T1xx models are even better with independent rear suspension. I own a 2020 Tahoe with about 80,000 miles, and it barely feels broken in. Personally, I prefer the last years of a platform rather than the first. But that’s just me!

@Dacey
Thank you, and noted! I’m not sure what you do at GM, but do you think 2015 is a good deal or should I test my luck with something much more expensive?

Honestly, I can’t say if that’s a good price or not, but 150,000 miles is pretty typical for these trucks. The K2 models have a lot of aftermarket support, so you’ll find plenty of help on YouTube for repairs.

@Dacey
Good to know! I might just dive into it then.

I had a truck when I was your age, and I loved it. My dad worked for Ford, so I started with a '99 Ranger and then an F-150. Eventually, I switched to a Chevy. There’s always a bit of risk with used cars, but with GM and Ford trucks, you get reliable components. Plus, they’re easier to work on. You can pretty much take apart most of the truck with just a few tools.

@Skyler
That sounds awesome! I love the idea of being able to work on it myself.

For sure! But just a heads-up, owning a big truck makes you the go-to friend for help, but it also opens up a lot of fun possibilities.

I think you’ll find that K2s are solid vehicles. Just check for rust on the frame and listen to the engine. If you can, have an independent mechanic inspect it; it’s worth the money for peace of mind.

That’s really good advice. I’ll definitely keep that in mind.
