Warranty concerns after oil leak on my new car

I recently got a new car with 12,000 miles and noticed leaking oil. I did my first oil change and maintenance at the dealer, and the second at a private shop. I then smelled something weird and brought it in. The service advisor, without even checking, said that if there’s an issue, it likely won’t be covered under warranty because I went to a non-GM repair shop. He even called me an idiot. Is this true?

If your car is still under the 36/36 bumper-to-bumper warranty, it should be covered unless they can prove that the non-GM garage caused the issue.

It really doesn’t matter where you take your car for maintenance unless they specifically did something that damaged it. I’d recommend getting another service advisor or taking it to a different dealer.

Under federal law, you have the right to take your vehicle to any repair shop for maintenance. The warranty can’t be voided just for that.

Thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely look into getting a second opinion.
